What are the applications of Driver Boards / Modules, Motors, and Solenoids?

Each of the driver boards / modules, motors, and solenoids have unique uses which provide varying solutions that require different areas of applications, mainly depending on how these devices are made and manufactured. For instance, motors convert electrical energy into mechanical energy through rotational motion. In other words, they are devices that use electric power to generate motive power. They are also easy to make smaller, allowing them to be incorporated into other kinds of machinery. As a result, they are found in a wide variety of applications in both the electronics industry and our daily lives. They are mainly used in machine tools, automobiles, subway systems, computer printers, and video cassette recorders, to name only a few.

Furthermore, to be able to drive a motor, you need a motor driver board / module. Unlike a motor controller board, a motor driver board / module offers a different driver board meaning. Essentially, it is an electronic device in which the electrical energy is first harnessed and later sent to the motor. For instance, when the microcontroller and the motor work on different ranges of voltage, the engine will use a current level that is higher than the microcontroller through the help of the driver board / module. A driver board / module contains the circuitry necessary to supply adequate power and control for AC, DC brushed and brushless, servo, and stepper motor(s), generally used in automation systems, laboratory automation, medical engineering, semiconductor production, and the packaging industry. In addition, you can acquire advanced motion control functions regarding speed, acceleration, and status monitoring with different motor types.

A solenoid, on the other hand,  is a device consisting of a coil of wire, housing, and a moveable plunger. An electrical current forms a magnetic field around this coil, drawing the plunger in. In other words, a solenoid’s primary role is converting electrical energy into mechanical energy. Solenoids create the magnetic field / flux that is formed when this electric current flows through the given wire. Afterwards, the housing, made of iron or steel, surrounds the coil, concentrating the generated magnetic field. The concentration of the magnetic field attracts the plunger to the stop, providing the necessary mechanical force in order to get the job done. Their most common uses are as switches, such as starters in vehicles.

How are Driver Boards / Modules, Motors, and Solenoids made?

The making of driver boards / modules, motors, and solenoids each require different materials.

In order to build a motor driver board / module, you require the following: 9V Battery, Arduino UNO, Wheels, DC actual motor, Jumper Wires, and BreadBoard.

Moreover, you need two mechanical components for constructing a motor: the stator and the rotor. A motor further has two electrical components: a magnet set and an armature. The former is attached to the stator and the latter to the motor, making a magnetic circuit.

Lastly, in order to create a solenoid, you need to coil an electrically insulated copper wire around an iron nail and pass a DC through this wire.

What are the different types of Driver Boards / Modules, Motors, and Solenoids?

Driver boards / modules, motors, and solenoids are each divided into further subcategories which perform different tasks for different needs.

How do relays work?

Another device similar to driver boards / modules, motors, and solenoids, even used as a substitute in some cases, are called relays. Relays are electric switches that use electromagnetism in order to convert small electrical stimuli into large currents. By leveraging weak inputs to power stronger currents, relays effectively act as a switch or an amplifier for the electric circuit, depending on the desired application.

Although relays differ in size, capacity, and applications they all function very similarly: one circuit is used to power another. One of the most common situations requiring relaying is when an application switches from high to low current, or the other way around, within the same circuit. For instance, the temperature sensors powering HVAC units require amperage levels that vastly exceed their wiring capacity. In such instances, relays are able to reduce the need for high-amperage wiring and switches, thereby wasting less money and taking up less space. Therefore, switching to relays in your electronic systems can reduce the size or weight of a casing or allow manufacturers to fit more functionality into a space of the same size.
